The Guide.

Since the loss of my mother, I have spent many hours and many miles alone on the trails. The trails and nature have provided a safe and beautiful space for me to grief and to process, and have also giving me an greater appreciation for life’s small moments.

During the summer and early fall in particular, I have spent most of my weekday morning hours in the trails around Nosehill Park. There is something magical about these hills, and despite the empty trails early in the morning, I have often found myself in good company.

It’s not just the physical beauty that surrounds me but that I cannot see. I am being guided, lifted and comforted with a blanket of love.

This illustration is based on a particular experience I had where during my entire session, I felt and envision an eagle or a crow, that pushed me forward with the power of its wings. I felt light, agile and sometimes as though I was flying or swimming in effortless space.

All fun facts aside, trail running has allowed me to grief honestly and in a healthy way, again and again throughout my life.

Just in the last couple of years, when days were very dark, and when my head was not in the right space, trail running got me to see the light, to add perspective into so many challenges and allowed me to dream (again), to observe more and to be grateful for everything I have.

Trail running got me out the door into the place I love the most - nature.

In every trail running session, I got to experience at least one special moment that made me smile, made me cry, made me appreciate, made me be myself (at the very core).

This is, of course not the first time I have been a trail runner. My entire life, running and walking in nature has always given me a space to collect myself and my thoughts, and like nature, it never disappoints.

Everybody runs for different reasons. I honestly run because I enjoy running (in nature). I enjoy my body in motion, I enjoy hopping over branches, skipping on rocks or simple dancing with the trail.

It feels honest and free, and makes me feel like a kid discovering the world around me through sounds, the elements and simply being in the moment.
